Filho e neto de professoras, Américo trabalha na área de educação desde os 15 anos quando participou do desenvolvimento de um dos primeiros projetos nacionais de criação de conteúdo digital para o ensino fundamental. A equipe criava infográficos e jogos que eram usados para ensinar português, geografia e história.
Américo fez seu mestrado em administração de sistemas pela UFPE e doutorado em educação pela Johns Hopkins University. Sua pesquisa consistiu no desenvolvimento de jogos lúdicos capazes de fortalecer a leitura e escrita de palavras das crianças já na educação infantil.

Seu experimento randomizado controlado com 749 crianças de 17 escolas privadas revelou que as turmas que utilizaram os jogos por 3 meses avançaram 68% mais em leitura e 48% mais em escrita do que as que não utilizaram.
Como consequência de seus estudos na Hopkins, Americo fundou a Escribo com a missão de fortalecer o aprendizado das crianças da educação infantil e anos iniciais do ensino fundamental. Em 2018 realizou um novo experimento em escolas públicas, revelando que as crianças avançaram 4x mais em leitura e 3x mais em escrita quando utilizaram os jogos lúdicos baseados em evidências. Desde então, realiza experimentos, formações e cursos online para fortalecer o ensino e o aprendizado de leitura, escrita e matemática.
Américo escreveu livros sobre alfabetização e aprendizado em ambientes digitais com base em evidências científicas. A obra mais recente é a coleção “A Professora”. No volume 1 da série, Juliana se vê enfrentando desafios inimagináveis para uma professora da alfabetização já no primeiro dia de aula. Este suspense e está repleto de evidências científicas e práticas pedagógicas efetivas. A Professora é uma história em que os leitores se engajam com o mistério e o humor e, ao mesmo tempo, aprendem a fortalecer o aprendizado de suas crianças. O público-alvo é de maioria feminina, acima dos 18 anos e composto por atuais e futuros professores(as), gestores(as) e coordenadores(as) escolares.
